Update from Surrey County Council

I received an update from Surrey County Council and am pleased to announce that they are moving forward with the Pollinator plan but also are really looking to support my cause. I’m thrilled!

Hi Archie

I now have an officer who will be specifically leading on this. This has progressed in a number of areas.

  1. Identification of a resource and a team to progress wildflower/roundabout verges. This resource should be able to take forward and help me more. I am arranging for some site visits so I will keep you in the loop.
  2. I am told the area you highlighted to me has had a blue heart put on it so it will not be cut. I am seeing if we can do some positive intervention this month as well as leaving it not to cut. It would be good to maybe talk about some social media/communications so we can let people know what is happening so they don’t just think someone has forgot to cut the grass. What do you think?
  3. I have also been in touch with your local Member of the Council and he is keen to support – so I will make some introductions. He has also identified some other verges that we could look at near where you are.
  4. We have a good idea of verges in surrey and have mapped them so we can look at how they could link as networks – we are now looking at how we can map roundabouts which we do not have as much information on and see which ones we should focus on as a priority from a nature recovery perspective.
  5. I have discussed your ideas with my the Coordinator for the Local Nature Recovery Strategy for Surrey (LNRS) which is just being developed. We are going to have a strand within it on verges/roundabouts which I think we play the role of a pollinator action plan. I will do an introduction to the Coordinator for you very soon as it would be good to have your input. I have sent on the pollinator info you sent me. The LNRS is a great opportunity for this work.

Apologies progress has been slightly slower than I wanted, but back on track now. Please do look for the blue heart – if it is not there please do let me know.

I will be in touch on the above shortly and make some introductions.

Many thanks

Carolyn
